PROCTER & GAMBLE AND CANFIELD CLINICAL SYSTEMS HIGHLIGHT VISIA™ COMPLEXION ANALYSIS TECHNOLOGY AT VISUAL COMMUNICATION EXECUTIVE SUMMIT

NEW YORK, Oct.2, 2002 -- In an announcement earlier this year, The Procter & Gamble Company exclusively licensed its proprietary VISIA™ technology to Canfield Clinical Systems. The VISIA™ Complexion Analysis System is the first digital imaging tool that provides quantitative measurement and analysis of visible and subsurface facial skin features. Procter & Gamble and Canfield Clinical Systems will jointly highlight the VISIA™ technology in a panel discussion on October 2 at “Visual Communication: Infoimaging at Work,” an executive summit in New York City sponsored by Forbes magazine and Future Image Inc.

During the panel discussion, VISIA™ co-inventor Greg G. Hillebrand, Ph.D., of Procter & Gamble, and Doug Canfield, president of Canfield Clinical Systems, will discuss the VISIA™ Complexion Analysis System’s role as a next-generation infoimaging solution and highlight its key applications in the skin care industry and medical field. Canfield Clinical Systems will offer the VISIA™ Complexion Analysis System for sale to medical professionals later this fall.

“The VISIA™ analysis database was originally developed and validated by P&G to objectively measure the skin improvements brought about by the use of our Olay® and SK-II® skin care products,” said VISIA™ co-inventor Greg G. Hillebrand, Ph.D., of Procter & Gamble. “We have since learned that practitioners in medical fields such as dermatology and plastic/cosmetic surgery view this combination of digital skin imaging and quantitative image analysis as a greatly needed tool for use in their practices.”

The cosmetics industry’s focus on anti-aging and procedures like photo-rejuvenation make the VISIA™ Complexion Analysis System a timely addition to dermatology and cosmetic surgery.

“Based on our additional developmental work with the VISIA™ technology, we anticipate the VISIA™ Complexion Analysis System to be a breakthrough tool for  medical and skin care professionals,” said Doug Canfield, president of Canfield Clinical Systems. “The VISIA™ technology shows significant promise for medical and wellness applications, and we believe it holds the potential to significantly benefit medical practices in a meaningful way.”

“Procter & Gamble and Canfield Clinical Systems are using visual communication to empower consumers making decisions that improve their health and appearance,” said Alexis Gerard, Future Image President. “The VISIA™ system has given doctors and skin care specialists the ability to engage in objective rather than subjective communications about the condition of a person’s skin for the very first time. This was simply not possible before the use of imaging technology, and shows the power of visual communication to change people’s lives for the better.”

VISIA™ Complexion Analysis System

The VISIA™ Complexion Analysis System is a self-contained unit that captures digital photos of the face and then automatically measures the amount of wrinkles, textures, pores and pigmentation. The system generates quantitative values for these skin features that previously could only be evaluated subjectively. Additionally, the VISIA™ system compares an individual’s skin features to that of others of the same sex, age, and ethnicity. This allows medical and skin care professionals to be more effective communicators and to better track treatment outcomes.

Canfield Clinical Systems’ Complexion Analysis Booth is a compact imaging station for reproducible facial photography. The VISIA™ system combines this unique booth with Procter & Gamble’s patented VISIA™ software for analysis and scoring of skin features.

Canfield Clinical Systems will also continue product development with enhancements such as integration with their Mirror medical imaging software. Mirror software has long been recognized as the leader in image management and cosmetic simulation in dermatology and plastic surgery.
